Stories from a Frugal Geek Eating Healthy

Eat Healthy

Hi, I'm Megan.  I live in Olympia, WA and I love good food.  You might have some more questions about me though, including....

What is this blog?

Articles on this blog combine the topics of health and eating delicious food all on a budget.  Watch out.  I'm a scientist, so I'm going to geek out on the numbers and not shy away from explanations.  If you are an intensely curious person about eating a healthy diet for less money, this site is for you.  My training as a scientist taught me how to recognize high-quality and trustworthy information (which these days is not so easy to find), and I am doing my best to apply that here.  So, though I'm not a nutritionist, I am skilled at gaining clear perceptions of the science behind nutrition.  I will try to transmit such informed perspective to you, without getting bogged down in minutiae.  I believe anyone can learn about anything, given proper motivation and a critical mind.  But watch out.  I also love reading and writing.  My stories might wander a bit, but if they do, I hope they are entertaining.  If you like a little humor and imagination thrown in with stodgy information, this site is for you.

Why are you writing this blog?

For several years now, I often hear in conversation, on the news, or in other media that it is “too expensive to eat healthy”.  Every time I hear it, the phrase feels jarring to me…because in my gut, I had never felt it was too expensive for me to eat healthy.  Therefore, I started questioning myself and the scientist in me started asking—what evidence is there to support this feeling?  So I started collecting data on how expensive it is for me to eat what I have learned is healthy.  This blog is a companion to a book I'm writing that tests this premise that eating healthy is too expensive, using the data I’ve gathered.  A few articles here may contribute to the book content, but most give information that is too specific for the book, or that needs a few photos to really do it justice.

Who are you?

Megan and Leon at the Snowy Range, WY

I’m a geologist.  For over 20 years, I have loved analyzing data, writing, and teaching about the Earth (and getting to travel to cool places on Earth to do these things).  But since starting this project, I have confirmed that I love analyzing data about any interesting topic, and my skills in scientific research translate readily to food and nutrition.  I live in Olympia, WA with my husband Tom and cat Leon, and when I’m not ruminating on food, you can find me gardening, crocheting, riding bikes (any type), swimming, running, hiking, or doing yoga.  We outfitted our van for camping and have been taking Leon with us on our mountainous adventures.

How often will you post?

I am on a hiatus from publishing new articles, since I got a job doing geology! At some point I hope to take up writing again, and I will renew this page once I do.

If you have a question I haven't answered on this site, please see my Contact page and let me know.  P.S. Thanks to my husband Tom Wetherell for many of the food pictures on this site!
